Hume argues that neither (i) or (ii) can give an adequate explanation of how we are justified in this sort of knowledge. WebbHume surmises that reason alone can never influence the will to action, because the most reason can do is discover such causal connections. He goes on to famously say, “Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them” (T 2.3.3.4; SBN 415).
